Spurs to make one last bid for Albion striker Saido Berahino

Tottenham Hotspur will make one final offer of £17m for West Bromwich Albion wantaway striker Saido Berahino before Monday’s transfer deadline.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, the Baggies are set to receive a proposed bid for the former England U21’s international with a valuation far less than the £22m rejected by chairman Jeremy Peace in the summer.

The two clubs were part of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer when Berahino outlined his intention to sign for Spurs, but Peace put a stop to it when Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, failed to reach the £25m valuation that Peace had.

Since then, Berahino has had a tumultuous time at The Hawthorns including a bust-up with Tony Pulis. Despite Pulis denying any rift between the two, the former Stoke City manager was quoted as saying that Berahino was “lucky to be on the bench” after a home game against Newcastle United.

The striker has spent most of the season as a substitute, and it has affected his goal tally with just three league goals scored this season. However, these problems have not deterred Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino who wants to link Berahino with his former strike partner at U21 level, Harry Kane.

The price may still prove to be a stumbling block for the transfer, and Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce blasted the amount of money that English stars such as Berahino cost.

West Bromwich Albion’s top scorer last season has failed to hit the same heights due to off the field problems.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, the former West Ham United manager said: “‘It’s £30m for Berahino. That tag, because he’s English, or because he’s played in this country, or because he’s a home-grown player, because he’s a striker, is the size of the valuation now.”

Allardyce raged: “The fact of the matter is, there are far more quality players available abroad than there are in this country. Because who wants to sell anybody a player from the Premier League?”
