Lukaku own goal sinks Inter as Sevilla win record 6th Europa League in five-goal thriller

The game kicked off with a bang, with only 3 minutes on the clock, Inter Milan was awarded a penalty when Diego Carlos tripped Romelu Lukaku in the box, which Romelu coolly put away pass Bounou to make it 1-0.

But this didn’t deter the Spanish side, and 10 minutes later they were level when a powerful low cross by Jesus Navas found Luuk de Jong who put in a beautiful low driving header to drive it into the net and past Handanovic.

On 16 minutes, Inter had a penalty appeal when the ball hit  Diego Carlos hand from a shot by Barella, but it was waved away. It was a back and forth affair with both sides playing great high tempo stuff, and on 32 minutes Sevilla took the lead. When Benega was taken down by Brozovic, the resulting free-kick was headed in from the near post by De Jong with another amazing looping header that gave Handanovic no chance and his second of the game.

But their lead only lasted 3 minutes when a loffying cross into the back post by Brozovic free kick found Godin head, who wonderfully headed into the bottom corner to level the game again.

Sevilla had two good chances before the end of the half with the first being a teasing cross by Navis on the right almost founding De Jong but when straight across the goal.

The second came from another free-kick by Banega that found the head of Ocampos who turned it towards the goal, but Handanovic got a strong hand to put it over the bar. The second half was a more cautious affair with both sides knowing the next goal would be crucial.

Inter had a good chance on 51 minutes when a good ball into the box found Gagliardini, but his strike was well blocked by Diego Carlos who was having an up and down game at this point.

Both sides had good opportunities to retake the lead, with Reguilon having a shot hit the side netting on 57 minutes, and Ashley Young had a shot from 25 yards go just over the bar before the hour mark.

But Inter had a glorious chance on 64 minutes when a great through ball by Barella put Lukaka one on one with the keeper Bounou but his effect was stopped by Bounou legs to keep the game level.

They would regard that missed opportunity when on 74 minutes, Sevilla retook the lead again when Benega wicked cross from the free-kick was cleared by Inter at first. But found its way to Diego Carlos who did a spectacular bicycle kick which took a big deflection off Lakaku to go into the back of the net.

Inter looked dilated but was able to chalk up one last chance nine minutes before time when Moses shot in the box which find its way to Sanchez, who tried to pock the ball over the line but an amazing goal-line clearance by Kounde denied them the equalizer.

But it was too late and the full-time whistle blew with Sevilla winning their 6th Europa League crown and most in the competition with this 5-goal thriller in Cologne.
